The Future of the Chinese Air Freight Industry

China is the fastest growing aviation market in the world thanks to the expansion of its air freight and air passenger industries. With air freight growth volumes predicted to drop off this year, how will the country’s significance in the aviation market be affected?

The growth of China’s air freight industry has led to a surge in the Asian cargo business over the last few years. This is reflected in the fact that air freight from Asia to Dallas Fort Worth airport (which is the leader in Asian cargo in the eastern and southern U.S) increased by 42% in 2004.

However, it is expected that China’s air freight volume growth will ease off this year. This will happen as the market returns to a more stable expansion pace after the post SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) rebound in 2004 and 5.

In 2004 and 2005, China’s air freight volume increased by 25% and 20% respectively. Passenger traffic also grew at this time; by 33% in 2004 and by 20% in 2005. This was as a result of people taking to the skies following the outbreak of SARS in the region.

Although the growth rate of China’s air freight business is expected to ease off this year, it will not halt altogether. According to freight industry experts, air freight cargo volumes are anticipated to rise by 10% in 2006. If it does so, China’s air freight volume will be 3.36 million tons.

The Original Eight: Genesis of the Modern Day Flight Attendant

The following article serves as a tribute to eight women who were the forerunners of the modern day flight attendant now numbering nearly 250,000 women and men worldwide.

In 1930, it was the dream of many a young man to marry a Boeing Skygirl. These “original eight” women were single nurses enticed from their homes with the idea of marriage to a rich-lonesome business passenger. Ultimately, however, they played a pivotal role in revolutionizing air travel by ensuring passenger comfort and through promoting the safety of air travel.

During that time America was in the beginning of an economic depression that would eventually deepen and spread to effect the entire world. Nevertheless, new advances in aircraft development continued to be promoted which helped strengthen the accessibility of air travel to the general public.

BOEING’S FIRSTS

The Boeing Company was, at that time, in the enviable position of being both the manufacturer of the first airliner and the first airline passenger transportation company providing cabin services. In 1928 Boeing introduced an airliner designed specifically for passenger comfort and convenience. The Model 80 touted a separate and enclosed flightdeck for the pilots and a spacious cabin for the passengers. The original model held twelve passengers and was followed one year later by the larger, 18-passenger, Model 80-A.

THE ORIGINAL EIGHT

Originally, young boys were hired to serve food, beverages, and comfort the passengers when they became airsick. Soon, however, it was suggested by Ellen Church, a registered nurse, that women — specifically nurses — could work as stewards. She felt that nurses would be best suited to care for passenger comfort (and illnesses), promote a female presence to demonstrate the safety of air travel, and to free up pilots for more important flight duties.

Air-To-Air Refueling Tanker Aircraft Replacement Update

B.A.E. Systems and the company have signed a collaboration agreement for the design, development, supply, and support of air-to-air refueling tanker aircraft based on the Boeing 767 aircraft platform, helping to secure significant numbers of high-value jobs and skills in the UK.

The Memorandum of Understanding applies to the current UK programmer for the future provision of replacement tanker aircraft, as well as existing programmers in the United States, Japan, and Italy. The M.O.U. also applies to all future programmers globally and potential growth into other large platforms. Both Bae Systems and the company are part of TTSC, the Tanker Team.

The Chief Executive, Bae Systems said, “The bid put forward by TTSC will deliver the best capability for the UK forces, in terms of interoperability and flexibility of usage in concert with the US, as well as securing jobs, skills, and work for many years to come.”

“The global market has already overwhelmingly made its decision with the company 767 having been selected by the United States, Japan and Italy. This is why B.A.E. Systems decided to team with the company to the benefit of the UK’s defense industrial base. Today’s M.O.U. will therefore deliver very long term substantial benefits if the UK now selects the Boeing aircraft.”

The President and CEO of the company Integrated Defense Systems commented: “A significant market for tankers exists world-wide. We are excited about making Britain’s aerospace industry part of our global tanker team. Today’s announcement is firm evidence of Boeing’s commitment to the UK and support of high value engineering jobs, as well as the companies close working relationship with BAE Systems.”

US Secretary of Defense is blocking a lease-buy deal for 100 Boeing tankers while he examines the circumstances surrounding misconduct charges that prompted Boeing last week to fire two executives, including one close to the deal.
