IT Security Becoming a Strategic Imperative

Report Explores a Strategy to Protect Business and Government Computer Systems from Hackers, Virus Writers, Identity Thieves and Terrorists

Washington, DC (PRWEB) March 29, 2005 — CRA Reports has issued a white paper titled “Toward the Stategic Security Imperative” explaining a new approach to information technology security. With recent high profile breaches of corporate and government computer systems, concern for computer security is no longer limited to network engineers and geeks. Mainstream media have picked up the story, and revelations of major security lapses have attracted keen attention from state and federal governments. Corporations risk enormous damage to reputation and goodwill when they lose control of confidential, personal information. In the past, hackers were primarily motivated by bravado and ego. Today’s intruder has a more troubling motive: the desire to profit from mass identity theft.

According to the report, many executives still do not understand how to secure and protect mission critical information. The challenges organizations face in reducing their risk stem from a limited, tactical understanding of risk and vulnerability assessment, perimeter security, threat remediation, anti-spyware, patch management and other critical security activities. When organizations treat these activities as separate issues, they fail to understand their overall risk posture, inhibiting their ability to respond appropriately and cost-effectively to threats.

“One of the greatest threats to enterprises today is that many, too many, organizations still consider security the lock they put on the door after the house gets built,” said Sean Moshir, CEO of PatchLink Corporation, sponsor of the report. The result is a tactical approach to security that is fragmented, manual or minimally automated, disjointed, and blind.

A tactical approach is also costly. According to recent research from Yankee Group, it can cost as much as $1 million to manually deploy a single patch in a 1,000-node network environment. The firm has documented an instance in which an organization spent $2 million to rush a patch in a telecommunications network that had 500,000 nodes. “What contributes to these costs? It is the manual labor, the fixing of problems, the downtime for businesses while the patches are being deployed,” explained Phebe Waterfield, Senior Analyst, Security Practice, Yankee Group.

Penis Envy: Billionaire Orders Private Airbus A380, Declares ‘Mine is Bigger than Yours’

Responsive Space Conference, Tuesday, 4-24-07
Responsive space was the subject for this special Space Show program broadcast live from the Responsive Space Conference in Los Angeles, CA (www.responsivespace.com). Several speakers and guests attending the conference discussed many topics of interest from responsive space to the Mid Atlantic Spaceport, space in the UK, engineering, and the need for more women and minorities in the space fields. Discussing these topics with were Stuart Eves of Surrey Satellite Technology Limited in the UK, Charles Kilmer of Boeing, Dave Jungkind of SEAKR Engineering, Dr. Billie Reed, Executive Director of the Virginia Commercial Space Flight Authority, Ron Woll or Scitor Corporation, Dr. Jim Wertz, CEO of Microcosm, Dr. Tom Bauer of Microcosm, and Dr. Shahzad Khaligh of Boeing. Note that those with Boeing were speaking for their own opinions, not representing Boeing in any way whatsoever. While responsive space was the main theme of this program, it was soon made clear to us all that the commercial element must prevail, not only for the government side of responsive space but for the commercial needs for it and even the military. It was exciting to hear how more attention was now being paid to the necessity for successful commercial standards over the years and it was showing up in the discussions and plans at this 5th Responsive Space conference. As you will hear from each specific participant in this program, not only were Responsive Space issues discussed, but we learned about special projects underway with some of the companies, cutting edge technology such as IP in space, and much more. We had many listener questions and comments for the guests, especially Dr. Reed regarding the Mid Atlantic Spaceport at Wallops. Toward the end of the program, Dr. Bauer raised interesting questions about American or any rockets for that matter that today could meet the definition and standard for responsive space. Both Dr. Wertz and I attempted an answer. Please use drspace@thespaceshow.com if you would like to send a comment or question to any of the participants on this show. I will forward to the participant if I have the email address or I will work to get the address for your comment/question

Changes Happening With Cruise Travel

Before the sixties, traveling on board a ship was the way of going to another continent. Travel by air, by passenger jets, which were absolutely luxurious, then ushered it. Even when Boeing introduced the famed 747 jets, travel by sea continued. This was despite the fact that it was nowhere near as pleasurable and relaxing as it is today. It was probably because it was a less expensive mode of travel as compared to air travel.

Shunra Named a Finalist in the SIIA's Codie Awards Competition for the Third Year in a Row

Shunra VE selected from among a record number of nominations in the “Best Systems Management” category.

New York, NY (PRWEB) January 25, 2007 — Shunra, the leading provider of network performance testing solutions, today announced that its Shunra VE solution is a Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA) 2007 Codie Awards finalist in the “Best Systems Management” category. Shunra was selected from among a record number of nominations this year in the prestigious competition run by the principal trade association for the software and digital content industry. This is the third year in a row that Shunra has been singled out as a finalist in the Codie Awards.

“Given the intense competition in the Codie Awards this year, we are especially honored to once again be chosen as a finalist,” said Thomas Charlton, Shunra CEO. “This noteworthy achievement is reflective of the superiority of the Shunra VE solution, especially when pitted against competitors in the industry. It also further reinforces why so many leading companies throughout the world that have chosen, and continue to choose, Shunra VE over competitors, and why we are winning so many industry awards. Shunra VE provides companies with the information they need to make decisions about application and network performance throughout the development lifecycle quickly and easily, enabling them to avoid post-deployment issues.”

The Codie Awards celebrate outstanding achievement and vision in the software, digital information, and education technology industries. Finalists in the competition are chosen through a combination of journalist and peer review involving over 219 individuals in the trade press, consulting, educators, IT specialists, and other neutral specialists. Finalists in the 2007 competition were chosen from a record-setting 1,200 plus nominations, representing over 600 companies.

“The 2007 Codie Finalists represent real winners, even at this stage of the contest,” said Ken Wasch, SIIA President. “Competition is fiercer than ever and that makes selection as a Codie finalist a major achievement. All the companies on this years list should feel justifiably proud of their recognition.”

Other recent awards won by Shunra include Frost and Sullivans 2006 Award for Growth Strategy Leadership, Internet Telephony Magazines Product of the Year award for both 2006 and 2007, Internet Telephony Magazines 2006 Best of Show Award, and the 2006 IT Standard Editors Choice Award. Shunra is also a 2006 Deloitte Fast 500 EMEA finalist, and a 2006 Red Herring 200 Europe finalist.

Shunra VE is a highly robust, comprehensive network simulation solution that creates a virtual network environment in the pre-deployment lab. It delivers a powerful, flexible and easy way to test the performance of applications and network equipment under a wide variety of network impairments — exactly as if they were running in a real production environment — throughout the development lifecycle. With Shunra VE, users understand the impact that the network and applications have on each others performance and on remote end-users experiences, and can uncover and resolve production-related problems — before rollout.

In addition to the empirical experience, Shunra VE provides a wide range of graphically rich reports and drill-down analysis capabilities. These help isolate and resolve the root causes of network and application problems early and determine whether any modifications to the application, network or infrastructure are needed.
