Boeing Transportation Tracking Team Wins Team Excellence Silver Award

The Transportation Tracking Team consisted of multi-skilled subject-matter experts representing stakeholders. This article describes the steps of our journey that accomplished our mission. All team members have received extensive team-building training that helped prepare us for this project. The tools and processes that were created and used to manage our performance and ensure our success are discussed.

The C-17 program uses processbased management techniques and a continuous improvement tool, shown in Figure 1, to manage its business. We start by defining the process and establishing metrics, and we finish by implementing improvements. For continuous improvement, we repeat the process, starting with the “determine performance” step.

During the “determine performance” portion of continuous improvement in the supply chain division, we looked at our performance metrics data. Our performance metrics for moving material to production clearly showed that our process was below goals, as follows:

* Quality was 98.2%.

* Timeliness was 89%.

* Efficiency was short of goal.

* Cycle time was greater than three days.
