China Airlines to implement Boeing’s Enterprise One application in a phased manner

US aircraft manufacturer Boeing (NYSE: BA) announced on Monday (3 October) that it will supply its Enterprise One software to China Airlines, a Taiwan-based carrier.

The announcement reportedly follows extensive collaboration between Boeing and China Airlines to fully understand the airline’s operational requirements and select the specific modules that best meet those needs. The two companies also developed detailed plans to ensure a smooth transition from China Airlines’ existing systems.

Boeing’s Enterprise One consists of a collection of modules designed to directly support control, planning and execution for line, heavy and shop maintenance. It also allows customers to establish information exchanges with ERP (enterprise resource planning) systems providing an end-to-end solution for aircraft maintenance and engineering, according to Boeing. China Airlines will use the components of Enterprise One to standardise its management of aircraft configurations and maintenance requirements across its entire fleet of aircraft.

China Airlines stated that it is looking at a phased implementation of Enterprise One starting with engineering, planning and production.

Implementation and deployment efforts will begin this month (October 2005) in a phased effort to be completed in 2006.

SPEEA to meet with Boeing negotiators

The Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace (SPEEA), a union representing Boeing’s engineers and technicians, has said that it will ask for benefits similar to those given to the machinists.

SPEEA representatives will reportedly meet Boeing’s representatives on 1 November. The union has said that the most important thing on the list is healthcare costs, but they will also ask for raises and an increase in pension payment, The Associated Press reported.

“Ford has a long history of research in the field of nanotechnology, and this relationship will strengthen our knowledge for the future,” said Ford vice president of research and advanced engineering Gerhard Schmidt. “As our chairman Bill Ford announced recently, innovation is the compass by which we are setting our company’s future direction — stylish in design, safer for families and first in technology that uses new fuels and offers new services to consumers. In line with this commitment, we are very pleased to be working with Boeing. They have been our long-time partner, and our joint collaboration with Northwestern University underscores just how serious we are about innovating for the future together.”

Ford also announced its dedication with Northwestern of a new $30-million engineering center on the school’s campus near Chicago, IL. The automaker provided a $10-million grant to build the new “Ford Motor Company Engineering Design Center” as part of the Robert R. McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.
