EU to examine Boeing merger

Karel van Miert, the EU’s Competition Commissioner, said the $45bn merger unveiled on Sunday night was “complex and problematic” and left observers in no doubt that Europe could ultimately block the deal if the two US aerospace groups failed to answer competition concerns. “It seems to us that it may raise questions regarding a dominant position,” Mr van Miert told a news conference in Brussels. He expected the two companies to submit the deal for approval in January.

Boeing Announces GOL Airlines Order for 40 Next-Generation 737s
The airplanes will be included in Boeing’s 2007 order total Boeing said in a statement. The order also brings to 127 the number of Next-Generation airplanes GOL has ordered since beginning operations in Brazil in January 2001.

Boeing may land here

Boeing, founded in Seattle in 1916 by William Boeing, also is considering sites in Denver and Dallas-Fort Worth for a new corporate center, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Phil Condit said today at a news conference in Washington, D.C.

In a related move, Boeing also said it is promoting the leaders of its three operating units to chief executive officers.

“Simply put, we intend to run Boeing as a business that has the flexibility to move capital and talent to the opportunities that maximize shareholder value,” Condit said.

Boeing’s massive commercial jet manufacturing plants will remain in the Seattle area, as will much of its research and development work, Condit said.

The company did not talk about specific sites it’s considering in the three cities. Condit said that while the current headquarters staff totals 1,000, he expects that will shrink by half after the move.

Boeing’s Airbus beater on runway

The 777-200 will be able to fly up to 10,100 miles, beating the 9,765- mile range of Airbus’s A340-500. First deliveries of the aircraft are set for September 2003. Phil Condit, Boeing chief executive, said Asian airlines would be among the biggest customers.

Kermit’s Boeing factory

When the biplane was transferred to Kermit’s base at Tamiami, Florida, it was flown regularly and was one of Kermit’s favorites. However, the aircraft received heavy damage in Hurricane Andrew. Kermit and a Nevada craftsman struck a deal to completely restore the Boeing 100 (which was a civil version of the Army/Navy fighter available for purchase by wealthy owners) and to create five other Boeings which will include two variants of P-12s and two variants of the navalized F4B. Along with these military aircraft will be another Model 100 - the highly modified speedster owned by Howard Hughes. The Hughes aircraft was operated in several different configurations and it was originally built as a Model 100A with a second seat (minus controls).
