new boeing model

Engineers at Boeing Co. have released more than 90% of the design drawings for the new Boeing Next-Generation 737-900, a ‘definitive milestone’ for the company according to vice president of 737/757 Derivative Programmes Jack Gucker.

Now most of the design drawings are complete parts for the new aircraft are being manufactured and delivered by worldwide suppliers while workers at the Boeing plant in Wichita have completed assembly of the fuselage for the first 737-900.

Boeing machinists on strike

Boeing machinists, who rejected the final offer from the company, launched a strike on 2 September.

The strike includes some 18,400 machinists in the Seattle area and in Wichita, Kansas and Gresham, Oregon and the action forced Boeing to stop production. Union members have said that they feel the agreement offered by Boeing was worse than the one negotiated in 2002. The 2002 deal expired on Friday, The Associated Press reported.

Boeing said that the strike would immediately put a halt to aircraft production. Company officials said before the strike that they feared it could be potentially very bad for the company, possibly sending customers to Boeing’s rivals, including Airbus.

Roughly 800-900 workers already have been given notice. The next round of layoff notices could go out as early as Monday, said Jerry Daniels, Boeing vice president, general manager and St. Louis site director. He said 300 to 400 workers would be let go every month until the reduction is complete. The F-15 suffered a blow last month when the Greek government signed a contract to buy Lockheed Martin’s F-16. The Greek order alone could have kept the Boeing line open two more years. The Israeli government postponed a $2.5 billion F-15 purchase just two weeks after Boeing lost the $3.5 billion sale of the aircraft to Greece. “Once we completed an assessment of our business environment based on the April 30 decision by the government of Greece, we decided to let our team and the community know as soon as possible what to expect for the foreseeable future,” said Daniels. “We remain committed to St. Louis and are taking these steps to ensure our competitiveness on our existing work, including a multiyear contract on C-17 and a proposed multiyear buy of the FA-18EF and on future programs, such as the joint strike fighter.” Daniels said Boeing has 210,000 workers nationwide. He said displaced St. Louis employees may find work at other Boeing sites.

Airbus expects strong demand for planes but no repeat of 2007
Tom Enders, chief executive, confirmed in Toulouse that Airbus had won 72 net orders fewer than arch-rival Boeing in 2007: 1,341 against 1,413. But it delivered more planes - a record 453 - as it ramps up production towards 54 a month in 2010. Enders said orders would be above the record 470 or more planes Airbus expects to deliver this year from a backlog of 3,421 orders, stretching over the six years of production. “We expect demand to continue to be strong but certainly not at the level of
