Boeing to shift core of company

The commercial aircraft industry, dominated by Boeing, has traditionally counted on annual growth rates of 4 percent to 6 percent in air travel. Since the Sept. 11 attacks, aviation officials anticipate a 20 percent drop in air travel.

As much as $35 billion of Boeing’s annual $57 billion in revenue comes from its commercial aircraft business, with the balance coming from its rocket, satellite, missile and military aircraft businesses.

Over the next three to five years, Boeing Vice Chairman Harry Stonecipher said, the percent of revenue from commercial aircraft will shrink to less than 50 percent.

“You are going to see a switch — where commercial aircraft will still be very large, but the others will see growth,” Stonecipher said.

Boeing, which moved its headquarters this summer from Seattle to Chicago, is aggressively trying to prove to investors that it is more than a commercial aircraft company.

As commercial aircraft business stays soft, the company is likely to focus more on its plants in Southern California, the base of its space and communications units, which employ 43,000 workers. The company also builds its 717 airliners and C-17 military transport planes in Southern California.

Boeing eyes political game

TACOMA, Wash. — China Airlines, the chief carrier for Taiwan, may cancel an order for 12 Boeing 777s in protest of the Clinton administration’s mainland China policy, but it soon will announce a bigger purchase, according to newspaper reports Thursday.

Boeing had been expecting a formal announcement of the $2 billion deal for 777s at any time. China Airlines signed a letter of intent to buy those jets, as well as 13 747s, in 1995.

Citing congressional and industry sources, the News Tribune of Tacoma reported that China Airlines is expected to announce a major purchase of A340 planes from Airbus Industrie as early as next week instead. Airbus, Boeing’s chief competitor, is a consortium of the aerospace companies of France, Britain, Germany and Spain.

Boeing acknowledges stolen documents

Boeing fired them, suspended a third employee, and said the incident was isolated. But subsequent events revealed more than just one instance of Boeing employees possessing stolen Lockheed documents. As reported by the Washington Post, court filings submitted by Boeing in a separate lawsuit revealed that the company fired an employee in 2001 who admitted to having “tons” of proprietary Lockheed documents, including secret pricing data. The filings were prepared as part of Boeing’s defense in a lawsuit brought by a former employee, Krishnan Raghavan, who alleged he was wrongfully fired after he told Boeing managers that a colleague - Dean Farmer, a former Lockheed engineer - had the proprietary documents. Farmer reportedly brought the documents - 8,800 pages - with him to Boeing from Lockheed.

Boeing CEO not optimistic

Talking to Dow Jones Newswires on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum conference in Jordan, Condit said: “For the most part, those were very long-term orders.”

“The market is going to come back. There’s no question in my mind that that’s going to happen,” he said. “But I wouldn’t try to read near-term market outlook from those orders.”

Boeing switches top executive

The new commercial aircraft chief is Alan Mulally, who managed the launch of Boeing’s 777 model range.
