Boeing P-26 Peashooter

With the introduction of the Boeing P-26 Peashooter, Giantscaleplanes.com continues to improve on its already terrific line of almost-ready-to-fly (ARF) scale planes. The kit includes a fiberglass fuselage and cowl and a full set of color decals. The wings are constructed of sheeted foam and covered with film, as are the stab and control surfaces. All of the Peashooter’s control surfaces have beveled leading edges, and the control-horn mounts come already installed. The P-26 has a 71-inch wingspan, is 51 inches long and runs on a .60 2-stroke or .91 to 1.20 4-stroke engine. It’s priced at $279.99.

Boeing poaches engineers

The giant aircraft maker has responded to a shortage of skills in the US by launching a European trawl to bring in the talent it needs to build its next generation of aircraft. It is unclear whether it is also motivated by the desire to deprive its arch-rival Airbus of the same people

Tony Docherty, senior vice- president of TAD Technical Services, which has been hired to find 3,000 engineers, says that about half will come from the UK. “There’s an element of brain drain,” he said. “The quality of British engineers is the best, and we are paying a world price for the talent.” TAD has screened 6,000 people since early September and is putting 2,300 forward to Boeing. Pay at the company ranges from $30 an hour for draughtsmen and women to $60 an hour for highly qualified engineers. As a norm, TAD says, that translates into salaries between $56,400 (pounds 37,600) and $103,400 (pounds 68,933). The average pay for members of the Institure of Electronic Engineers in the UK is pounds 36,000: very few engineers earn more than pounds 50,000. TAD also points out that the cost of living is lower in the US than the UK. Mr Docherty acknowledges that the recruitment drive will put pressure on UK manufacturing, where the shortage of engineering skills is already starting to hurt. “Companies like British Aerospace and Rolls-Royce have not trained the people they should have done,” he said. “British industry is playing the price of its disinvestment in training and engineers in the past 10 years.”

Letter: Boeing workhorse

I have no interest in the Boeing company, but I have travelled around the world for 50 years on varied aircraft, including many hours on the Boeing 767. You quote three instances in stating that the “plane’s record has not been unblemished”.

One was the hijacking of the Air Ethiopia aircraft, with the hijackers refusing to allow the crew to land to refuel. You cannot really blame the crew or the aircraft for this. Another was an emergency landing at Heathrow.

The history of an aircraft with more than 3 million flights and some 813 million passengers need not necessarily be seen as “blemished” over the 17 years that the 767 has been operational.

Boeing outperforms expectations

Profit in the quarter dipped 7 percent, mostly from a charge related to the sale of commercial airplane facilities in Wichita, Kan., and Tulsa, Okla., and because earnings from a year earlier were inflated by a tax refund.

But Boeing, which has several hundred employees in Utah, said better productivity helped boost operating profit at both its defense unit and its commercial airplane business, which has seen a surge in airplane orders as spending on new aircraft grows worldwide, particularly from low-cost and overseas carriers.
