Boeing 777 High Lift Control System
Aerospace and Electronics Conference, 1993. NAECON 1993., Proceedings of the IEEE 1993 National (1993), pp. 476-483 vol.1.The Boeing 777 High Lift Control System (HLCS) is a state-of-the-art microprocessor-based system that provides fly-by-wire control, protection and built-in-test and maintenance access functions for the leading edge flaps and trailing edge flaps drive and actuation systems. This system is designed to take advantage of technologically proven concepts as well as judicious application of new concepts in response to market demands, airline customer input and a thorough review of lessons learned from previous aircraft programs. The HLCS is comprised of two independent control lanes; a control lane is defined as an FSEU (Flap/Slat Electronics Unit), associated flap lever sensors, associated flap and slat position sensors, and flap and slat solenoid coils. Control is alternated between the two control lanes with each flight to limit exposure time to latent faults. Each FSEU has a control channel and a monitor channel that use dissimilar microprocessors. Each channel monitors the other and transfers control to the other FSEU lane if there is a disagreement between them, or if other failures are detected. The system may be operated in three modes, primary (hydraulic drive power), secondary (electric drive power) and alternate (electric drive power). Primary and secondary modes are fly-by-wire control via the FSEUs and flap lever. Alternate mode is a hardwired electrical control mode

Countdown’s Bushed!: Best Laid Plans Edition
Download | Play
Download | Play (h/t Heather) Another day, three more SNAFUs for the Bush administration& First up is the recent $860 million contract awarded to Boeing to construct a virtual fence along the US/Mexican border back in February, despite some early problems with delivery. As it turned out, its money not so well spent. Just two months later, the government has decided to scrap the prototype (to the tune of $20 million) because, as they were warned earlier, the fence just didnt work. But hey, the GOP is the party of fiscal responsibility, or so they say. Then there is yet another less than inspiring story from Iraq. Although the administration both here and in Iraq have been crowing about the growing success of the Iraqi troops, the reality is a little more understated. Case in point: Lt. Col. William Zemp describes a hiccup in a planned sweep of the town of Mahmudiya, south of Baghdad: the Iraqi troops didnt make it because they overslept. Oops! And finally, its The Big Dick. Mr. Vice President spoke in front of the Manhattan Institute on Monday and used the opportunity to blame the Democrats for letting FISA expire, putting the nations safety in jeopardy. Only problem? Its not true. Hard as it is to believe, it appears that the man behind Bush was pushing false information for the sake of fear mongering and partisan gain. Shocking. Oh, and Keith? Im not sure if it was intentional, but your Dick Cheney impression sounded less like the Penguin and more like Nurse Diesel. Still looking for that fruit cup?
