Mike asked:

I am not a great flyer - in fact it generally terrifies me - and after 9-11 I refused to fly for a few years. I got over it by telling myself even if something were to happen like an explosion or bird strike - the statistical likelihood of which I can live with - at least planes don’t just fall apart or crash from turbulence. Now of course the Air France crash has freaked the hell out of me. What do people think of it, Airbus planes and the piton tubes? Would really like the opinion of people in the know in the industry. Thanks people.

Canada will receive its first Superjumbo commercial flight at Pearson International airport, Toronto when Emirates Airline lands here with the Airbus 380 on June 1st, 2009.

The Airbus A380 is a double-decker, wide bodied aircraft with four engines produced by Airbus.  The largest passenger airliner flew its maiden flight on April 27, 2005 from Toulouse in France.  The first commercial flight was introduced by Singapore Airlines from Singapore to Sydney, Australia on October 25th of the same year.

With 50% more floor space than the next-largest aircraft; Boeing 747-400, the double-decker can offer up to 525 seats in standard 3 class configuration.  If operated with all economy, it can take up to 853 passengers. With design range of 15,200 km or 8,200 nautical miles, it can fly comfortably from Boston to Hong Kong.

Emirates, the airline from Dubai, United Arab Emirates will upgrade its current 3 x weekly Boeing 777 operations, that it began flying in October 2007 with A380.  Versus 360 seats on its B777 plane, the A380 will operate with 489 seats.

The airline is expected to operate with 14 suites in first class and 76 flat-bed seats in the business class on the upper level and 399 seats in the economy class on the lower deck.

In a statement Emirates said the Superjumbo aircraft will have an onboard lounge.  The services will include an extensive menu of multi-course meal options, the award-winning in-flight entertainment product ‘ICE’ with over 1200 channels of entertainment, SMS and email facilities as well as seat-to-seat calling.

Whilst the fares are subject to change, the airlines is expected to offer round-trip prices to Dubai starting at $1,130 for economy class, $6,550 for business class, and $10,000 for first class, which includes a lounge and two shower spas.

Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal are the only airports in Canada that have made the necessary adaptation to handle the world’s largest aircraft’s passenger configuration and wide wingspan.

Today Airbus and Boeing are the leading aircraft manufactures. But at the moment Airbus is having to release 10000 employees, but I believe though that Airbus is the leading aircraft manufacture with much more fuel efficient aircraft and quieter.

Airbus got a $40 Billion yes BILLION $ contract for a refueling jetliner.

Boeing will have to cut it’s workforce because of this lost contract.

Indian came into being with the enactment of the Air Corporations Act, 1953. It was renamed Indian on December 7, 2005 from its earlier name Indian Airlines. Indian Airlines started its operations from 1st August, 1953 with a fleet of 99 aircraft and was the outcome of the merger of seven former independent airlines namely Deccan Airways, Airways-India, Bharat Airways, Himalayan Aviation, Kalinga Air Lines, Indian National Airways and Air Services of India. The year 1964 saw the Indian Airlines moving into the jet era with the introduction of Caravelle aircraft into its fleet followed by Boeing 737-200s in the early 70s. Along with its wholly owned subsidiary Alliance Air, it flies a fleet of 70 aircraft including Airbus A300s, Airbus A320s, Airbus A319s, Boeing 737s, Dornier Do-228, ATR-4, Airbus A319, A320s & A321s. Alongwith Indian cities, it flies to many foreign destinations which include Kuwait, Singapore, Oman, UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Myanmar besides Pakistan, Afghanistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Maldives

Indian Airlines’ free run over the Indian skies ended with the entry of private carriers after the liberalization of the Indian economy in the early 1990’s when many private airlines like Jet Airways, Air Sahara, East-West Airlines and ModiLuft entered the fray. The entry of low-cost airlines like Air Deccan, Kingfisher Airlines and SpiceJet has revolutionized the Indian aviation scenario.

Indian has been a pioneer in the aviation scene in India. It was the first airline in India to introduce the wide-bodied A300 aircraft on the domestic network, the fly-by-wire A320, walk in flights and easy fares. It flies to 76 destinations - 58 within India and 18 abroad. It has a total employee strength of around 19300 employees along with Alliance Air and carries over 7.5 million passengers annually, along with Alliance Air

Domestic carrier Paramount Airways Pvt. Ltd has signed an agreement at the Paris Air Show with European airplane maker Airbus SAS to buy ten A321 passenger jets and an option to buy 10 more. The fleet expansion will allow Paramount to start international operations in 2010. This is the only such big order from an Indian airline firm in about two years.

Overseas routes: Paramount’s M. Thiagarajan has said the carrier has got a commitment from European funding agencies to finance the purchase. The carrier will complete five years of domestic operations in 2010.Each Airbus A321 carries a list price of $90.3 million (Rs434.34 crore) but it is likely that, given the global economic slowdown, Airbus would offer some additional discounts.

The purchase comes at one of the worst times for civil aviation in India, which has seen falling passenger numbers in recent times. Domestic carriers are expected to post combined losses of at least $2 billion for the fiscal year ended 31 March.

Breaking with its earlier plans, Paramount, which flies a fleet of five Empresa Brasileira de Aeronáutica SA-made Embraer aircraft in the domestic market, will use the Airbus A321 for its overseas routes instead of the wide-bodied aircraft it had considered earlier. The carrier will complete five years of domestic operations in 2010. Under Indian regulations, a carrier can start overseas operations after having serviced Indian skies for at least five years.

A typical Airbus A321 can include about 180 seats in an all-economy configuration, but Paramount Airways’s A321 are likely to have 150 seats in the no-economy configuration.A first class cabin will come with flat beds while business class offers extra reclining seats and greater legroom.

That plane looks scary to me. It’s like they’re trying to take a serious form of transportation and turn into something fun. I think the airline industry is just asking for trouble. It seems like the Airbus 380 would house a more uncontrolled environment. And there’s too much excess that doesn’t direct itself at the safety and performance of an air craft.
