Commercial Aviation Movies: Volume 2
Commercial Aviation Movies: Volume 2
This DVD contains three separate movies featuring United Airlines, TWA and American Airlines in the late 1940s to early 1960s. You will join American Airlines Flight Three in a 707 jet bound for Los Angeles and TWAs famous Super-Constellation Star of Paris, later renamed Star of Dublin. The Star, tail number N86511 had a particularly rich and eventful history. It was christened on February 5, 1946 and became the first TWA airliner to fly intercontinental routes for TWA. The first flight was from New York to Paris and took about 19 hours. This aircraft provided great domestic and international service until, as The Star of Dublin, it was tragically lost on September 1, 1961 while taking off from Chicago when a small nickel bolt in the elevator assembly broke causing abrupt stall configuration and an uncontrollable crash. In this film we get to fly aboard this TWA superstar from Kansas City to touchdown at La Guardia in New York.
In addition this DVD shows you to the many back office coordinated activities that make up the complex operation of passenger airliners. Special features of this DVD include: live communications between the pilots and controllers as the takeoff roll and takeoff take place; an air car, short-lived in American aviation history, setting down to ask a motorist directions to his destination; breathtaking pictures of soaring among the clouds; inside peek at a United Airlines DC-3s cabin in operation in flight; views of the Grand Canyon from the sky; pilot deck crew running through the pre-takeoff check list in the cockpit; actual instrument flying with the panel instruments through the sky and the approach; the bustle and discipline of plane overhaul in the shop.
Other worthy segments include the basics of flying in IFR conditions (bad weather, low visibility conditions) through the sky and to touch down, glimpses into the maintenance of pilot skills and health and detailed footage of plane maintenance and overhauls.
